Such a nice surprise to find out that "Kevy Key Jam" from the Harbourfront show ended up being "Sentimental X's".

Glorious.

I immediately pre-ordered the album and t-shirt after listening to the leak.

See, sometimes illegal actions pay off!

I bought the box set, t-shirt, and poster. I HAD to listen...! D:

Highway Slipper Jam is just... breathtaking. I had hoped for that guitar jam midway into Texico, though. World Sick is one of the best songs I've ever heard. Forced To Love is my new summer anthem, along with Water In Hell. Sweetest Kill is so beautiful, "I held your head(hand?) into the light, scars were on the back..." From the fast paced songs like Chase Scene and Art House Director to the eerie Me and My Hand, I believe in Forgiveness. My new all-time favourite album.

After all the frustration and turmoil that's reflected in the self-titled album, i'm glad the follow up has a more upbeat tone. Yeah sure, lots of times headaches and heartaches can lead to great creative output, but still, I like that the tone of this album is more along the lines of "jamming together with a bunch of friends", which seems to be how Broken Social Scene started out in the first place.

Thanks! I really have enjoyed this record, but am I the only one that thinks it could have been a lot better minus a few songs? (Water in Hell is pretty weak, except for the awesome breakdown). But we all know BSS will never be known for their restraint.

I totally agree with Rustin's comments... aren't we all getting a LITTLE over excited about this? I mean to go as far as to suggest it's your favourite album of ALL TIME, after only a few weeks of listening is a little intense. I'm not meaning to be a downer, but c'mon! Awesome that everyone seems to be enjoying it thoroughly, but a little temperance is in order :P

My largest critique of the entire affair is that it's a little too c*ck rock... Has anyone else noticed that there's a steady increase in ego driven guitar histrionics / narcissism on each subsequent BSS release? I get the impression (especially from Charlie's note on the accompanying EP) that a lot of the ambient textures and soundscapes they birthed from have sort of taken a backseat to the rawk anthems... a shame, really.

When I first heard that they were recording at Soma, I was so excited, thinking that they would record they more chill, relaxed, atmospheric album yet - think Shampoo Suicide x 14 tracks or so... (orgasmic!) .... instead they seem to be shooting for the rafters this time.

Forgiveness Rock Record is a rather apt title for those who dug the Ted's Wrecking Yard days.

some of it seemed to remind me of there older shit but the other was just a little much. it sounded like they where having fun, and i cant really knock on that. but at the same time it does seem like they lost alot of there aesthetics that made them truely good. if i didnt know what this band was capable of, this album wouldent have impressed me to the fullest like "you forgot it in the people" did. They played a texas show last year that i saw, and they did that song "sweetest kill". Back then i didnt know what it was. I waited around and got a set list, and in the space of "sweetest kill", was the printed words "Mtv Jam". that could mean a number of things. but to me it sounds like they know what that shit sounds like and they just have some odd humor for it.

Harrison,

Well said, and I like your perspective. It's important to point out that they seem to be having fun, and after all, who wouldn't want to see that... but like you said, knowing what the band is capable of, I find it hard to completely love this album. Songs like "Forced to Love" just seem so simplistic, particularly in melody, which prevents this album from being the stunner it could have been. That isn't to say it's bad, it's just ... underwhelming? For example, "Art House Director" is a solid effort, with some of Whiteman's best hooks to date, but it has none of the etherial qualities of his previous output with BSS. It feels crowded and dense. Yes, so did "Ibi", and many others on the self titled release, but with songs like that it felt like BSS were unhinged, a train going off the tracks... I can't help but think they're reaching too hard on this one to be stadium rock.

They chill shit out on the next track, "Highway" but it's only a brief reprieve, and only makes me pine for the atmospheric qualities of their older stuff even more.

I know this will probably insight some petty backlash, but I can't help but feel Mr. Drew is to blame for some of this. His showboating at recent shows is a little much, and his songs seem to always be the "big" ones. Remember when the band was so indiscernible that you couldn't even tell WHO was leading?! For some reason now, and especially after Kev's "presents" album, (eg. "Lucky Ones") I get the impression that the Tom Cochrane side has edged out those free and easy peace jams like "I'm Still Your Fag"....

That being said, it would be unfair of me to want my favourite band to exist in a bubble and remain EXACTLY how *I* in particular like them, but at the same time, I can't help but feel they've gone in a direction I can't quite jive with. FGL and YFIIP (and to a certain extent self titled) were complete albums, where flow and sequencing was as vital as the songs themselves. FRR on the other hand feels much more disjointed... a mishmash of individually (somewhat) exciting songs, but not a whole.

Thoughts?
